On any given night there are at least 1500 people sleeping on the streets of Downtown Portland. These people have little prospects for bettering their individual situations. High unemployment rates, mental health cuts, and cuts in the social services agency budgets assure that this will be the most populated the sidewalks have been in the history of Portland...
While we are all concerned and sympathetic regarding the situation on our streets, many citizens feel as if they dont know how to help. We are offering a opportunity to make an enormous difference in someones life with minimal impact on your own. All we need is anything that you can bear to part with. If you have ever been cold then you can appreciate what a differnce something as simple as a pair of sweatpants can make. Consider the simple joy that a blanket or a warm coat can make... now imagine the healing power of 1000 blankets? That is our goal: to raise as much usable winter wear as we can and to use blankets as our measuring stick.

So we have a two-fold, two-day approach to our mission. We will be having a Charity Poker Tournament on Dec 17th with a gauranteed $1,000 prize pool at Ace of Spades Poker Club on SW Barbur Blvd. $30 buy-in, $30 rebuy, $20 add on. starts at 7pm. Admission to the club is ten bucks, but we will waive half of your entry fee with the donation of cold weather gear....
Then on Saturday, Dec 18th we will be hosting the EFRYTING DRIVE at Blitz-Ladd Sports Bar on SE 11th and Sherman. fun starts at 6pm. This will be an event in the tradition of our classic formula, put a bunch of super cool people in one place and ask for donations. We have reached arrangements to have music provided by some of Portlands finest DJs, including but not limited to DJ Spark, GenErik, Dj Wels and Verbz (roster to be expanded). We will have economy friendly food and drink specials and a charity ping-pong tournament thats is free to enter with a donation of winter gear.

Everything that we raise will be donated to and redistributed by The Downtown Chapel. This is an excerpt I took from their mission statement:
"Dedicated to serving our neighbors experiencing poverty and homelessness, our parish's Community Programs are dynamic expressions of our faith in action. Whether someone is in need of food, clothing, hygiene, bus tickets, or just a friend, that person is treated with the respect and dignity that they deserve. Our focus on hospitality allows us to focus on each person, rather than just the need of that person, and begin to walk with them towards positive transitions and engagement in community."
seems like the kind of folks we wanna work with. Im so thankful to form a partnership with such a worthwhile organization! |
